Welcome

If you are interested in playing league chess or simply wish to playsocial chess you will be very welcome! We meet on Wednesdays from 7 pm.


In order to join the club you need to be a member of the Coleshill Social Club, this will cost you approximately £30. The fee to be a league playing member of the chess club is £75 and under 18s are charged £25. In addition, league playing members are required to pay their own ECF fee, which is currently £21. Members not wishing to play league chess pay £25. New members pay nothing on their first visit and £2 for each subsequent visit.


Coleshill Social Club fees last for twelve months from the day of joining. Chess Club full fees are payable by the last day of May or half by the last day of May and the residue by the last day of September. A pro rata rate will be charged for new members joining after the last day of June. Fees can be paid by cash, cheque or Bank Transfer.


The overall membership will therefore cost in the region of £125. Over the course of the year this equates to £2.40 per week for some of the best playing conditions in the league and an extremely friendly club.

About us

Coleshill Chess Club was founded on Wednesday 4th May 2016. Des Green was appointed as the club secretary and applications were made to play in the Birmingham & District Chess League and the Cannock & District Chess League. The team finished a creditable 5th out of 13 in Division 6 of the Birmingham League and Paul Barrett won the first trophy for the fledgling club when he was victorious in the Division 6 Individual Tournament. The Cannock League team finished bottom in a division of 4 teams.

The following season, 2017/18, following an increase in membership the club fielded two teams in Division 6 of the Birmingham League comprising 12 teams. Promotion was achieved to Division 5 by the "A" team when they finished second to a strong University of Birmingham team. The "B" team finished in 8th position. The Cannock League team finished 4th in a division of 5 teams.

2018/19 season resulted in the Division 5 team finishing top of the Birmingham League of 12 and gaining promotion to Division 4. The Division 6 team finished 12th out of 14. The club also reached the final of the Dudley M Townshend Trophy losing to an extremely strong Redditch outfit. Individual success came with Tom Vanes winning the Birmingham League's Under 80 tournament, Paul Barrett appeared in his second final but was defeated in the Under 120 section. The Cannock League team lost only one match all season and finished 3rd out of 5 in a very tight campaign. Richard Bailey became the first winner of the Ray Dolan Trophy when he was successful in the tournament for players graded less than 100. Richard also reached the final of the Robert Ward Plate.

Four matches played and only one victory

Monday 9th March 2026 saw the first of four matches played by the club during the week.  Ward End Social started the week off with a win against BDCL Coleshill 5A by a score of 2.5 to 1.5. Coleshill were represented by Malcolm Phipps, Paul Barrett, Steve Judd and Eamon Murphy. The following evening, Tuesday 10th March 2026, Graham Barrett, Ray Bettam, Steve Judd and Geoff Stokes were defeated by a similar score, 2.5 to 1.5, when playing for the Coventry League team against Nuneaton 'B' in the final of the Coventry League Knock Out Competition. Two matches on Wednesday 11th March 2026, witnessed a defeat and a win. The defeat went to the BDCL Division 4 team of Paul Roper, Graham Barrett, Malcolm Phipps, Paul Barrett and Steve Judd by a score of 2 - 3 in the home match against league leaders South Birmingham 'A'. The sole victory of the week fell to Gary Haycock, Rob Payne and Andy Glover by 2 - 1 over Ward End Social in the BDCL Minor Division.

Three more matches to report for the week. On Monday 2nd March 2026, the depleted Division 4 team of Paul Roper, Graham Barrett, Ray Bettam, Malcolm Phipps and Steven Judd travelled to play Kynoch and returned with a hard fought 2 - 3 defeat. Wednesday 4th March and the Division 5B team made the journey to play Solihull 'C' and were defeated by 3.5 to 0.5. The team was Geoff Stokes, Malcolm Jones, Chris Hubbocks and Des Green.  On the same evening the Coventry League Division 2 team of Paul Roper, Graham Barrett, Malcolm Phipps and Steve Judd were victorious by 2.5 to 1.5.

Yet another busy week with the club playing four matches in a variety of competitions. It all started on Tuesday 24th February 2026 with the Coventry League Division 2 team travelling to play Nuneaton 'B' in a rehearsal of the KO Cup Final to be played on the 10th March. Honours were even in a 2 - 2 draw, the Coleshill team was Paul Roper, Ray Bettam, Steve Judd and Eamon Murphy. The following evening the BDCL Minor Division team entertained the current league leaders Solihull 'A'. The visitors left with a 2.5 to 0.5 victory against Rob Payne, Gary Haycock and Chris Hubbocks. There were two matches on Thursday 26th February with the BDCL Division 4 team of Paul Roper, Graham Barrett, Ray Bettam, Richard Bailey and Geoff Stokes being beaten 3 - 2 in the Semi Final of the Townshend Trophy at South Birmingham also from Division 4. Meanwhile at Lichfield, the BDCL Division 5B team were beaten 3 - 1 by league leaders Lichfield. Coleshill were represented by Gary Haycock, Malcolm Jones, Des Green and Ethan Murphy.

The Minor Division team started the week on Monday 16th February with an away 1.5 - 1.5 draw at Kynoch. The team was Geoff Stokes, Des Green and debutant Ethan Murphy. The following evening Paul Roper travelled to the Jewellery Quarter to play James Julyan of Central Birmingham Chess Club in the semi final of the BDCL max 1900 Individual Tournament. Paul won his tie and awaits to discover his opponent in the final. Paul was in action again on Wednesday 18th February 2026 when playing in the 2.5 to 2.5 drawn home fixture against Longbridge Chess Club. The team was Paul Roper, Graham Barrett, Ray Bettam, Richard Bailey and Malcolm Phipps. Unfortunately on the same evening, Steve Judd had to withdraw due to illness against Chris East of Sutton Coldfield in the BDCL max 1600 Individual Tournament at the Quarter Final stage. Wednesday also witnessed Geoff Stokes defeating Des Green in one of the remaining games in the internal Shadow League Tournament.

The website is back up and running after a traumatic happening in my life. My wife died in Heartlands Hospital on Christmas Day 2025 after a long illness. Obviously things like chess have taken a back seat. I am slowly becoming adjusted to my new life, it will take time!

They returned with a victory on board count after drawing 2 - 2. They await the semi final draw!

The Coleshill team was, Peter Thompson, Paul Roper, Graham Barrett, Ray Bettam and Richard Bailey.  Wednesday 17th December 2025 and a home defeat for Coleshill 'B' in a BDCL Division 5 clash with Kynoch 'B'. Coleshill team lined up as Gary Haycock, Malcolm Jones, Chris Hubbocks and Joe Timothy.

The team of Malcolm Phipps, Steve Judd, Eamon Murphy and Des Green battled hard but went down by 3.5 to 0.5. On the same evening, Geoff Stokes was successful in his BDCL Max 1300 Individual Tournament quarter final replay against Arthur McCumiskey of Solihull. The team of Rob Payne, Gary Haycock, Nigel Terry and Chris Hubbocks entertained Solihull 5B in another Division 5 fixture and were defeated 3 - 1 on Wednesday 10th December 2025.

In the BDCL Division 5, the team of Malcolm Phipps, Eamon Murphy, Geoff Stokes and Rob Payne were defeated 2.5 to 1.5 by Solihull 'C'. A youthful BDCL Minor Division team from Solihull 'B' defeated Gary Haycock, Malcolm Jones and Andy Glover 2 - 1. On the same evening, Chris Hubbocks was defeated in the Quarter Final of the BDCL Max 1300 Individual Tournament.

On Monday 24th November 2025 the BDCL Minor Division team of Geoff Stokes, Des Green and Andy Glover travelled to Ward End Social and were beaten 3 - 0. The following evening, the Coventry League Division two team travelled to and beat Coventry 'B' by 3 - 1. The successful team was Peter Thompson, Paul Roper, Graham Barrett and Ray Bettam. Wednesday 26th November 2025 witnessed a BDCL Division 5 defeat for the Coleshill 'A' team at home against Walsall Kipping by 3.5 to 1.5. The team was depleted with captain Steve Judd falling ill on the day and one player not turning up! The team was Malcolm Phipps, Eamon Murphy and Gary Haycock.

On Wednesday 12th November the Coleshill 5B team of Rob Payne, Gary Haycock, Nigel Terry and Malcolm Jones entertained Shirley & Wythall in the BDCL Division 5 and were defeated 3.5 to 0.5. In addition, Malcolm Jones suffered a defeat on Tuesday in the Quarter Final of the BDCL Max 1300 Individual Trophy when he travelled to play Ben Haines of Longbridge Chess Club.

On Tuesday 28th October 2025 the Coventry League Division 2 team of Peter Thompson, Paul Roper, Graham Barrett and Ray Bettam travelled to play Coventry "C" and returned with a 2-2 draw. Thursday 30th October 2025 and a much depleted team for the Coleshill 5B match were beaten 3 - 1 by a strong Walsall Kipping team. The Coleshill team was Rob Payne, Des Green, Chris Hubbocks and Joe Timothy (making his league debut).

On Wednesday 22nd October 2025, Coleshill Chess Club hosted two matches and suffered two defeats. The BDCL Division 5A team of Malcolm Phipps, Paul Barrett, Steve Judd and Eamon Murphy were beaten 3 - 1 by a strong Solihull 5A outfit. On the same evening, the Coventry League Division 2 team of Peter Thompson, Graham Barrett, Ray Bettam and Gary Haycock went down by 2.5 to 1.5 against the University of Warwick 'C' team. However the club have lodged an appeal over a possible board violation order by the visitors.

Wednesday 1st October 2025 started off with two matches in the first round of the BDCL Townshend Trophy. The Division team of Peter Thompson, Paul Roper, Graham Barrett, Richard Bailey and Ray Bettam travelled to play fellow Division 4 opponents Solihull. They progressed to the second round with a 3 - 2 victory. Not such good news for the Division 5A outfit who, despite a handicap advantage of 0.5 were beaten by Division 4 Kynoch by 4 - 1.5. The team was Malcolm Phipps, Paul Barrett, Steve Judd, Eamon Murphy and Gary Haycock. On Wednesday 8th October 2025, the BDCL Minor Division team gained their first points of the season at the third attempt when they beat local rivals Sutton Coldfield by 2 - 1. Geoff Stokes, Malcolm Jones and Des Green gained the victory.

Tuesday 23rd September 2025 and two of Coleshill's teams were on their travels. The BDCL Division 4 team of Peter Thompson, Graham Barrett, Richard Bailey, Ray Bettam and Geoff Stokes travelled to Stourbridge and returned with a 2.5 - 2.5 draw. Meanwhile the Minor Division trio of Malcolm Jones, Des Green and debutant Chris Horrocks made the journey to Rednal to play against Longbridge Chess Club. They were soundly defeated 3 - 0. The Division 5A team rounded off the week with a creditable 2 - 2 draw on Thursday 25th September at Shirley & Wythall Chess Club. The team was Malcolm Phipps, Paul Barrett, Eamon Murphy and Geoff Stokes.

The 2025/2026 Chess season got off to a start on Wednesday 3rd September.Birmingham League rules dictate that when two teams from the same club are in the same division that they must play one another in the first league match of the season. The encounter between Coleshill's Division 5 teams resulted in a 4 - 0 win for the A team.

Sixteen established, new and prospective members attended the AGM on 14th May 2025. The following officers were elected: Chairman - Graham Barrett, Secretary and Treasurer - Des Green, Assistant Treasurer - Malcolm Jones, Publicity Officer - Steve Judd, and Safeguarding Officer - Steve Charlton. The club will have four team in the Birmingham & District Chess League - one in Division 4, two in Division 5 and one in the Minor Division. One team will play in Division 2 of the Coventry Chess League. There would also be two internal tournaments played throughout the season.

On Tuesday 29th April 2025 the Division 4 team, already relegated, made the journey to Mercia against opponents who needed a point to ensure a relegation play off against Shirley & Wythall. The draw was achieved, 2.5 to 2.5, thanks to the efforts of Ray Bettam, Richard Bailey, Eamon Murphy, Gary Haycock and Rob Payne. The following evening the Mercia Division 3 team defaulted their match against Coleshill. The three league points awarded to Coleshill results in them being awarded a play off relegation match against Shirley & Wythall. The confusion has arisen by Shirley & Wythall, quite correctly in our view, having to play this match due to Mercia defaulting. We will leave this to the league to resolve!

Tuesday 22nd April 2025 and a depleted Coleshill team, containing three reserves, travelled to play a Stourbridge side looking for a win to secure promotion. The Coleshill team of Peter Thompson, Paul Roper, Graham Barrett, Richard Bailey, Steve Judd and Des Green were heavily out graded on all boards but fought valiantly and never disgraced themselves despite a 5.5 to 0.5 defeat. This leaves Coleshill needing to win their last match of the season, at home against Mercia, to secure a win to force a relegation play off against Shirley & Wythall.

On Monday 14th April 2025 the Division 5 team of Steve Judd, Malcolm Jones, Geoff Stokes and Des Green travelled to play their last match of the season against Kynoch 'B'. This was to be the third time that the fixture was due to be played, Coleshill having requested two earlier postponements following medical issues. Third time proved to be unlucky as the home team were unable to locate the key to their storeroom where all of their equipment is housed! The clubs agreed that with no alternative date being agreeable to both team that they would advise the league accordingly and suggest that the fixture be declared a no result. The league have yet to confirm their decision.

Tuesday 8th April 2025 and Peter Thompson, Ray Bettam, Steve Judd and Des Green travelled to play Nuneaton 'D' in the last Coventry League fixture of the season already champions of the third division. They returned with a 2.5 to 1.5 result. The following evening, the BDCL Division 4 team entertained Oscott in their penultimate league fixture of the season. An experienced Oscott team took the honours against Ray Bettam, Richard Bailey, Gary Haycock, Rob Payne and Geoff Stokes  by 3.5 to 1.5.

Tuesday 1st April 2025 witnessed a good away victory for the Coventry League Division 3 team of Paul Roper, Graham Barrett, Paul Barrett and Eamon Murphy who travelled to play Rugby 'B' in a reverse fixture from the previous week. They returned with a comprehensive 3.5 to 0.5 win to increase their lead in the already won league The following evening a depleted BDCL Division 5 team consisting of Malcolm Jones, Geoff Stokes, Ostap Snihura and Andy Glover were beaten 3-1 in their visit to play Solihull 'B'. The third match of the week on Thursday 3rd April 2025 resulted in the BDCL Division 4 team, albeit with only four players, were soundly beaten by league champions University of Birmingham by 4.5 to 0.5. Ray Bettam, Richard Bailey, Eamon Murphy and Gary Haycock battled well against all of their opponents graded in excess of 1700!

Monday 24th March 2025 started well with a win by 2 - 1 for the BDCL -Minor Division team. The last match of the season was played by Gary Haycock, Geoff Stokes and Andy Glover. A draw on Wednesday 26th March 2025 saw the Coleshill team crowned as Champions of the Coventry League Division 3. A score of 2-2 in the home match against Rugby 'B' ensured that the team cannot be caught. The Coleshill team was Peter Thompson, Graham Barrett, Paul Barrett and Eamon Murphy. The defeat came on the same evening when the BDCL Division 5 team of Steve Judd, Malcolm Jones, Geoff Stokes and Nigel Terry were defeated by 3-1.

On Monday 17th March 2025 the BDCL Division 4 team travelled to Birmingham St George's hoping to add to their first league point of the season gained last week. They went close and were defeated 3-2 by one the top teams in this year's Division 4. The gallant team was Ray Bettam, Richard Bailey, Steve Judd, Eamon Murphy and Gary Haycock. On Wednesday 19th March 2025 the Coventry League Division 3 team enhanced their chance of winning the League title with a comprehensive 3.5 to 0.5 over Coventry 'E' who arrived with only three players. On Tuesday 11th March 2025 the Coventry League team of Peter Thompson, Graham Barrett, Ray Bettam and Eamon Murphy were victorious when they visited University of Warwick 'D' and won by 3-1 to go to the top of the league. On Wednesday 12th March 2025 the club only had seven players available due to a variety of reasons. The BDCL Division 4 team of Ray Bettam, Richard Bailey, Eamon Murphy and Malcolm Jones played out a 2 - 2 draw with high flying Stourbridge  to gain their first league point of the season. On the same evening the BDCL Minor Division of Ostap Snihura, Des Green and Andy Glover went down to Solihull 'B' by 2.5 to 0.5. Many thanks to the Magnificent Seven for their efforts on the night.

Tuesday 5th March 2025 and relegation took another step towards reality when the BDCL - Division 3 team were beaten 3.5 to 2.5 when they visited fellow strugglers Olton 'B'. The much depleted team of Peter Thompson, Paul Roper, Graham Barrett, Paul Barrett, Ray Bettam and Rob Payne battled well but are now relying on other teams to slip up in the final run in. The following evening, Wednesday 5th March 2025, the BDCL - Division 5 team were well beaten on home soil by Solihull 'A'. Steve Judd, Malcolm Jones, Geoff Stokes and Nigel Terry were powerless to stop their opponents from gaining a comprehensive whitewash and remain winless in the league.

Three teams were in action and all suffered a defeat this week. On Monday 24th February 2025 the BDCL Division 4 team of Ray Bettam, Richard Bailey, Eamon Murphy, Gary Haycock and Des Green were defeated at Halesowen by 3 - 2. Wednesday 26th February 2025 and the BDCL Division 3 team suffered a defeat in their bid to avoid relegation when they were defeated at home by Olton 'A' 4 - 2. The team was Peter Thompson, Paul Roper, Graham Barrett, Paul Barrett, Eamon Murphy and Gary Haycock. On the same evening the BDCL Minor Division team were defeated at Solihull 'C' by 2.5 to 0.5 to virtually take away any chance of winning the league. Steve Judd, Geoff Stokes and Andy Glover represented the club.

The week started with the BDCL Division 5 team of Steve Judd, Malcolm Jones, Geoff Stokes and Des Green travelling to Minworth to play Sutton Coldfield 'B' on Monday 17th February 2025. They were defeated 3 - 1. The following evening Peter Thompson, Graham Barrett, Ray Bettam and Eamon Murphy returned to winning ways in the Coventry League with a 2.5 to 1.5 win away to Coventry 'E'. The third match of the week witnessed a 1.5 to 1.5 home draw against Solihull 'A' in the BDCL Minor Division. Coleshill were represented by Steve Judd, Rob Payne and Andy Glover.

Three matches last week. On Wednesday 12th February the BDCL Division 5 team lost a home match against a strong Walsall Kipping outfit by 3-1. The Coleshill team was Steve Judd, Malcolm Jones, Geoff Stokes and Nigel Terry. On the same evening at Coleshill, there was a first defeat of the season for the Coventry League team by a similar margin of 3-1 against Nuneaton 'C'. Coleshill were represented by Graham Barrett, Ray Bettam, Eamon Murphy and Des Green. Thursday 13th February saw the BDCL Division 3 team of Peter Thompson, Paul Roper, Graham Barrett, Malcolm Phipps, Paul Barrett and Gary Haycock gain a valuable point in their bid to avoid relegation with their 3-3 draw at Shirley & Wythall.

On Wednesday 5th February 2025 the club enjoyed a win and suffered a defeat in two different competitions. The victory came in the Coventry League where the team of Paul Roper, Steve Judd, Malcolm Phipps and Paul Barrett beat visitors Rugby 'C' by 3-1 to continue their 100% start in Division 3. On the same evening, Solihull proved to be too strong in their Birmingham League  Division 4 visit to Coleshill winning by 5-0. The Coleshill team was Ray Bettam, Richard Bailey, Eamon Murphy, Gary Haycock and Rob Payne.

On Monday 27th January 2025 the Minor team of Steve Judd, Gary Haycock and Andy Glover were victorious by 2 - 1 when they visited Kynoch. This victory elevates the team to the top of the league. The following evening, Tuesday 28th January 2025 the team of Paul Roper, Graham Barrett, Ray Bettam and Eamon Murphy travelled to play Nuneaton 'C' in the Coventry League. They were successful 2.5 to 1.5 and remain unbeaten after four league matches.

On Wednesday 22nd January 2025 the Division 5 team of Steve Judd, Malcolm Jones, Geoff Stokes and Des Green travelled to South Birmingham. The 4 - 0 defeat suffered was played in the coldest room imaginable. All players kept their coats on and it was an absolute pleasure to go outdoors and turn on the car heater for the journey home.

Wednesday 15th January 2025 saw the Trophy aspirations of both of Coleshill's teams end against higher graded teams. A depleted Division Three team suffered a whitewash with a 6 - 0 defeat to Tamworth from Division 2. The result was made to look a little better with Coleshill receiving a 1.5 handicap advantage. The Coleshill team was Peter Thompson, Graham Barrett, Paul Barrett, Malcolm Phipps, Malcolm Jones and Des Green. Final recorded score, Coleshill 1.5 Tamworth 6. On the same evening the Division 4 team of Ray Bettam, Steve Judd, Eamon Murphy, Gary Haycock and Rob Payne were defeated 3-2.

Two matches on Wednesday 8th January and one on the following night witnessed a busy start to 2025. The BDCL Division 5 team of Steve Judd, Malcolm Jones, Ostap Snihura and Des Green recorded a 2 - 2 draw when they entertained Shirley & Wythall on Wednesday evening. On the same night the Coventry League team of Paul Roper, Ray Bettam, Eamon Murphy and Gary Haycock returned from their trip to Daventry with a defeat by 3.5 to 2 in the Quarter Final of the K.O. Cup. The BDCL Minor team of Steve Judd, Gary Haycock and Geoff Stokes travelled to Lichfield on Thursday evening and returned victorious by 2 - 1. This result sends them to the top of the league.

On Wednesday 18th December 2024 the Minor Division team of Steve Judd, Malcolm Jones and Andy Glover defeated Longbridge 2.5 to 0.5 to move into second place in the league. Following an appeal by Coleshill regarding a board order violation by Sutton Coldfield in last week's match, the league have awarded the match to Coleshill by a 6 - 0 scoreline. The Division Five match postponed from last week has been arranged for Monday 27th January 2025.

Two away matches were scheduled for Monday 9th December 2024. The BDCL Division Three team of Peter Thompson, Paul Roper, Graham Barrett, Malcolm Phipps, Paul Barrett and Eamon Murphy travelled to local rivals Sutton Coldfield and were defeated 4.5 to 1.5. The scheduled BDCL Division Five match against Kynoch 'B' was called off at lunchtime due to a medical emergency within the Coleshill team. It remains to be seen whether Kynoch claim the match or agree to a new date for the fixture.

The Minor Division team of Steve Judd, Geoff Stokes and Andy Glover were successful on Wednesday 4th December 2025 when they defeated local rivals Ward End Social 2 - 1. On the same evening, the Coventry League team were due to face Rugby 'C' at home in the first round of the Knock Out Cup. However, their opponents were unable to raise a team and thus Coleshill will be included in the second round of this competition to be played in early 2025.

A depleted Division 4 team travelled to Central Birmingham on Tuesday 26th November 2024. The team of Steve Judd, Eamon Murphy, Gary Haycock, Rob Payne and Des Green were out graded on all boards and were defeated 3.5 to 1.5. In contrast, the Coventry League team of Peter Thompson, Paul Roper, Graham Barrett and Eamon Murphy defeated Nuneaton 'D' by 3.5 to 0.5 to continue their unbeaten start to life in Division 3.

Monday 11th November 2024 witnessed the first league point gained for the Coleshill Division 5 team. The team of Steve Judd, Malcolm Jones, Geoff Stokes and Des Green travelled to local rivals Ward End Social and returned with their first league point of the season after recording a 2 - 2 draw. Steve Judd and Des Green were in action again on Wednesday 13th November 2024 in the BDCL Max 1300 Individual Tournament. Steve lost his first round match against his Halesowen opponent and Des suffered the same fate in his first round replay against his Solihull opponent. There was a win for Eamon Murphy in the Club Championship when he defeated Paul Barrett and Malcolm Jones and Geoff Stokes drew their game in the Coleshill Shadow League.

It was a busy evening at Coleshill Chess Club on Wednesday 6th November 2024 with eleven boards in action. The Division 4 team of Ray Bettam, Richard Bailey, Steve Judd, Eamon Murphy and Gary Haycock were defeated 4 -1 by a strong Shirley & Wythall team. There was success for the Coventry League team of Peter Thompson, Paul Roper, Graham Barrett and Malcolm Phipps who defeated the University of Warwick 'D' by 3.5 to 0.5. Individual games were also played in the BDCL Max 1600 Individual Tournament - Round 1 and the Club Championship Round 4. In the BDCL Tournament, Paul Barrett lost to his Olton opponent and the Club Championship Geoff Stokes defeated Nigel Terry. Des Green was also in action at Solihull where he drew his first round game in the BDCL Max 1300 Individual Tournament.

A mixed set of results for the Coleshill club this week. On Tuesday 29th October 2024 the team of Peter Thompson, Ray Bettam, Eamon Murphy and Gary Haycock travelled to play Rugby 'C' in their first match in the Coventry League. They were assisted in their quest when the hosts defaulted on one board that resulted in a 2.5 to 1.5 for Coleshill. The following evening, Wednesday 30th October 2024 the Minor team of Geoff Stokes, Des Green and Andy Glover were outplayed 2 - 1 by a youthful Coleshill 'C' outfit who therefore recorded their first win one the season. Ray Bettam was in action again in the first round of the Birmingham & District League Maximum 1600 Individual Tournament. He exited the competition after being beaten by Jim Gillespie of Olton Chess Club.

The club are finding the going tough with two more defeats. On Wednesday 23rd October 2024 the Division 3 team of Peter Thompson, Paul Roper, Graham Barrett, Malcolm Phipps, Paul Barrett and Ray Bettam had home advantage against South Birmingham 'B' and were on the wrong end of a 4 - 2 scoreline. The following evening, Thursday 24th October 2024, the Division 4 team of Ray Bettam, Richard Bailey, Eamon Murphy, Gary Haycock and Geoff Stokes travelled to Longbridge to play a team outgrowing them by over 200 points per player. They battled well but were finally defeated by 3.5 to 1.5 and are still searching for their first league points of the season.

A bad week for results but out graded heavily in most games. On Tuesday 15th October 2024, the team of Ray Bettam, Richard Bailey, Eamon Murphy, Gary Haycock and Des Green travelled to Moseley to play South Birmingham 'A' in a BDCL Division 4 encounter. The home team were triumphant by 4.5 to 0.5. The following evening, Wednesday 16th October 2024, the BDCL Division 5 team of Steve Judd, Malcolm Jones, Geoff Stokes and Des Green were beaten on their own boards by Lichfield 3-1. On the same evening the BDCL Minor Division team of Gary Haycock, Nigel Terry and Andy Glover made the trip to play Solihull 'A' in a fixture between two teams with a 100% record. The Coleshill boys were defeated 2 - 1 thus losing their unbeaten record.

A busy week of chess for the Coleshill players. Wednesday 2nd October 2024 witnessed two matches at the home venue. A depleted Division 3 team scored an impressive 3.5 to 2.5 victory against a strong Redditch outfit. The team was Peter Thompson, Paul Roper, Paul Barrett, Malcolm Phipps, Ray Bettam and Eamon Murphy. On adjacent tables, Zion Hartop, Nigel Terry and Andy Glover continued a fine start to the season with their third victory in the Minor Division with a 2 - 1 win against Kynoch. The following evening, Thursday 3rd October, the Division 5 team of Steve Judd, Malcolm Jones, Geoff Stokes and Des Green endured a cold evening at Longbridge and went down by 0.5 to 3.5.

Wednesday 25th September 2024 witnessed eleven boards in operation in the first rounds of the BDCL Trophy competitions. The Division three team were forced to play two reserves in their Terrill Trophy match against a very strong South Birmingham team from Division 2. Coleshill received a handicap allowance of 1.5 points. This proved to of no real advantage as the team of Peter Thompson, Graham Barrett, Malcolm Phipps, Paul Barrett, Des Green and Geoff Stokes were defeated by 4.5 to 3. Also in operation was the Division four team who entertained Kynoch 5B in the Townshend Trophy. Kynoch received a 0.5 handicap. The Coleshill team of Ray Bettam, Richard Bailey, Eamon Murphy, Rob Payne and Steve Judd progressed to the next round round with a 3 - 2.5 victory.

Their opponents proved to be too strong and won by 5-1. Meanwhile the Minor Division team of Rob Payne, Geoff Stokes and Des Green were successful on their travels to Longbridge and returned with a 2-1 victory.

The AGM was delayed for a week and was held on Wednesday 15th May 2024. All of the officers were elected en bloc and a Safeguarding Officer was appointed. The club will be playing in the Birmingham League with teams in Division 3, Division 4 (provisionally), Division 5 and the Minor Division. There will also be a team playing in Division 3 of the Coventry League for the first time. This will ensure that members have access to more games during the season.

Wednesday 1st May 2024 witnessed the last remaining games of the season in the Coleshill Club Championship. After six rounds of a Swiss Tournament, Ray Bettam was crowned the first Coleshill Club Champion. Eleven members contested the tournament organised by Peter Thompson.The AGM will be held on Wednesday 8th May 2024 commencing at 7:30 pm. Everyone is welcome! The last game of the season for the 5B team was held on Wednesday 27th April 2024. The result on the night was a win for the visitors, South Birmingham 3-1. This however was changed to a 4 - 0 victory for the home team as South Birmingham were guilty of a board violation. Their board 2 player was graded more than 100 points above their board 1 player. They had also defaulted their board 4 who failed to arrive. The Coleshill team was Phillip Parnell, Rob Payne, Malcolm Jones and Ostap Snihura.
